Cat food recalls are meant to remove a cat food from circulation before any cats become ill from an identified risk in the cat food. The cat food recall may be issued after some cats have become ill or even died after eating the cat food. If there is a cat food recall, retailers give refunds to customers who purchased the product and pull the product from the shelves.

One cat food recall involved food that contained wheat gluten that was tainted with melamine. Melamine has many uses including the manufacturing of filters, plastics, and tiles. The tainted wheat gluten was imported from China.

After some cat illness and death was attributed to the melamine-tainted cat food, a cat food recall was issued. The people who were determined to be responsible for the presence of melamine in the animal feed were indicted.

Wheat gluten was not the only cat food ingredient with a history of being contaminated with melamine. Melamine-tainted rice gluten caused several cat food recalls in 2007.

With a voluntary recall, the cat food manufacturer may detect a problem with the cat food and start a cat food recall. Voluntary cat food recalls may be issued if there is a minor problem with the cat food that does not pose a significant risk to the health of the cats that eat it. In more serious cases, the Food and Drug Administration may issue a recall.

One recent cat food recall was a voluntary recall involving cat food that contained incorrect amounts of zinc and potassium. The NUTRO Natural Choice Complete Cat Care dry cat food with best if used by dates of May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010 was voluntarily recalled. There have been no reports of cats becoming ill due to this cat food.

When a cat food manufacturer makes a new cat food, it is not required to get approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) unless it contains certain ingredients that require testing by the FDA. Colorings and additives must be deemed safe by the FDA.

Consumers can find information about cat food recalls from the website for the FDA. The cat food recall is often announced in the television and online news media. The retailers have information on cat food recalls.
