After returning from the pet store with a new aquarium tank, you may realize that it doesn’t look exactly as it did in the store. They leave you in charge of setting up the decorations, and that can be a lot of fun.
The first thing you need to do is decide on a theme. You can choose anything between sunken ships and Disney. The theme you select for your aquarium decor is simply a matter of personal choice. After that I suggest you create a rough sketch and scale everything to size. Doing this will help you fit everything in the tank, and make sure it looks nice. A little planning always helps.
There are many different types of decorations for your aquarium available. And by many I mean hundreds, even thoushands to choose from. Anything from driftwood to gravel, rocks to ceramic decor, and even plastic plants are just a small range you have to select from. Once you pick a theme, the rest is easy. One simple thing to keep in mind, is that you will want to generally arrange the smaller items in the front, and the larger in the back. Just so you can see them.
You will want to avoid putting random, yet good looking, items into your aquarium. They may look good, but are not always healthy for the fish.
Cleaning all the aquarium decor before placing it in the tank is also a good idea. Common cleaners that you findaround your house are not always healthy for the fish. Once you build the aquarium, it should be cleaned about once a month with cleaner made for cleaning aquariums. You will want to buy cleaning solutions that go after biological and mineral deposits.
A few tips to keep in mind while choosing your decorations, are to get a variety of decorations to put into your tank. This will create more flexibility in the types of fish you can end up keeping. This means that when setting up your plants, sand or gravel, rocks, and other misc decor, to be sure there are plenty of caves, nooks, and tunnels that your fish can explore. In addition to exploring, some fish will hide when they feel threatened. Also note that you should keep lots of free swimming room for the fish.
Bear in mind the types of fish when initially planning on how to decorate. Some fish don’t like all setups that other fish do like. Researching what types of environment fish like can go a long way when planning.
Aquarium decorations can there for more reasons than simply looking good. You can use them to disguise ugly pluming and other necessities. A lot of fish will enjoy the shelter as well, and some will even lay eggs in shelters.
Structures and rocks that are used as decor can often turn into territorial boundaries for the fish. When choosing the aquarium decor, you should keep in mind that fish love to explore. The more ridges and holes in the decor the better. Try to rearrange the decorations in the tank occasionally, when you clean for example, to keep the aquarium new and fun for the fish, and you!
