There is a lot of inaccurate information circulating around the Internet regarding flea control for pets and natural flea control products such as neem. Many people have heard of neem oil but don’t actually know much about it or how to use it safely with pets.
Neem is the common name for the two closely related species in the Meliaceae family:
* Azadirachta indica A. Juss (commonly known as the Indian neem, margosa tree, or Indian lilac)
* Melia azadirachta (commonly known as the Persian lilac).
Neem leaves, bark and the oil expressed from these plants have been used for medicinal purposes in India and neighboring countries over thousands of years. Two neem compounds are credited with insecticidal activity (azadirachtin and salannin). Azadirachtin acts as an insect feeding deterrent and growth regulator. Contrary to what most people believe, neem does not produce a quick knockdown and kill, but does stop treated insects from molting into different life stages-so they die without reproducing.
One of the few references on the use of neem with animals is Bizarre and Indigenous Drugs Useful in the Treatment of Animals (1929) which lists some of the veterinary applications of neem and notes that “leaves, bark and oil expressed from the seeds are generally used.” However, neem based products have only been licensed in the US for pest control since 1985. Neem is commonly diluted and used in pet shampoos, flea sprays, surface sprays, or sachets and many commercial options exist on the pet flea product market.
Some of the commercial neem pet products that are now on the market include:
* Richard’s Organics Neem Pet Oil,
* Neemaura Neem Pet Spray,
* TheraNeem Pet Shampoo,
* Ark Naturals Neem Protect Pet Shampoo,
* Ark Naturals Neem Protect Pet Spray Repellent, and
* Azmira Neem Pet Dip.
In addition, there are many other bio-control products made to help fight fleas in the yard and the environment. Before using any herbs or essential oils on pets, be sure to check with your veterinarian because many natural products are toxic to some animals. Don’t forget that pet senses are much more sensitive than that of humans so use any scented herbs or oils with a bit of restraint.
