Different pet insurers have different features of their pet insurance but the standard things to look out for are as follows.

Look for the level of cover. You want to have something in the region of £2000 minimum cover for vets fees. Some policies allow you to have up to £8000 of vet cover. This would cover all treatments. Look for the treatment cover length too. Some cheaper policies may only cover the cost of treatment for 12 months. That might mean that after 12 months you’re faced with the option of paying for treatment yourself. With a life long illness this could be expensive.

Many pet policies now include a 3rd Party Liability section. Some policies also offer you free access to both a legal and vet advice help line. The legal advice line will help if your pet is involved in an incident or accident.

If you have more than one pet then you can often get a discount by insuring all your pets at one place. This certainly helps with the costs.

Some of the better policies give you the Advertising & Reward options for if your pet is lost you can claim money to help with advertising costs to reunite you with your pet.

Death from accident or illness can also be covered by pet insurance policies although only in young pets. Bereavement counseling is also available as part of many packages.

Most pets will need vet treatment for accidents or illness at some point in their life. For most people vets bills can come as a terrible shock and can cause real heartache as sometimes the money just won’t be available for expensive treatments. The peace of mind you get from pet insurance is fantastic – knowing that problems will be taken care of promptly without you having to raid the piggy bank or your life savings. Pets are such an important part of our lives that it would be a shame not to offer them the vet treatments they need in times of crisis.

For those who travel abroad with their pets look for cover for this. Many policies will allow you to apply for treatment for your pet whilst you’re abroad as long as you’ve complied fully with the PETS travel scheme.

It’s certainly something you want to consider when you buy your cat or dog – so that they are covered from the very start. Price in the cost of monthly insurance along with the pet food and other things your pet.
