Angelfish are numbered among of one of the largest families of vertebrates on Earth. The family Cichlidae encompasses over 1,300 scientifically classified species in 220 different genera. Previously undiscovered species are found and identified every year. It is estimated that there could be as many as 3,000 species that fall within the scientific classification of this family. The family Cichlidae, referred to in laymen’s terms as cichlids, also includes oscars, discus and tilapias. Many sources will tell you that angelfish are indigenous to the Amazon River in Brazil. While this is in fact true, this species is also native to the Orinoco River and Essequibo River systems. Populations of this fish can be found throughout Guyana, Venezuela, and Columbia in addition to Brazil.

Angels are remarkably elegant creatures. These fish are arguably the most popular species with fish lovers around the world. Their unique triangular profile without doubt contributed to their unparalleled popularity. They are sold in an array of colorings, from unembellished to banded, veined, black, golden, or Koi. These fish are one of the most obtainable species found in pet stores. Angels are extremely inexpensive. Angels are unproblematic fish to keep in good physical shape.

While angels will not grow anywhere near the size of an oscar or a discus, they are not a small species. You should be conscious of the fact that the angels you see in pet shops are typically quite young. These fish routinely reach six inches in diameter. They can be kept in a rather small aquarium when they are young. A fully grown angelfish will require a minimum tank size of 10 gallons. A 20 gallon aquarium is advisable.

Angelfish are even tempered by nature. These fish are awesome community dwellers. A word of advice: They will instinctively look on smaller tank mates as a food source. It is advisable not to mix them with species such as rasboras, glofish and fancy guppies. You also do not want to house them with species like barbs or tetras. Both of these fish are fin nippers by nature. An angelfish’s long, flowing fins are delightful target, prime for nibbling on.

Angelfish are omnivorous. They will thrive on pretty much anything. Any common variety freshwater fish food will suffice. Brine shrimp, tubifex worms and blood worms are ideal nutritional supplements and will insure maximum vitality.

These fish originate from South America. They favor water on the acidic side of the pH scale. A pH of 6.8 and temperatures ranging between 72-86 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal. If maintained properly angelfish have an average life expectancy of 10 years.

Unlike a lot of fishes in the Amazon River, angels do not ingest their young. Just the opposite, the proud parents will instinctively stand guard over their eggs for the duration of the 3-4 day gestation period. Once hatched, the couple will herd their children from plant to plant for close to a week. At some undetermined point, the angelfish’s parental instinct will disappear. The couple will suddenly view their newborn as a means of nutrition. They should be taken out of the breeding tank.

Housing a species in a volume of water that is too small is not wise pet ownership. Even a novice fish owner wouldn’t entertain the thought of keeping an angelfish in a 5 gallon desktop nano aquarium.
