Mange Treatments To Heal An Ailing Animal

If you’re looking for Mange medicine for your afflicted pet, you should absolutely consult your veterinarian. Dogs and cats are the most prone to the condition, which is caused by mites. It is also known by other names such as Ear Mite Infections, Scabies, Red Mange or Cheyletiella.

If you are dealing with one of the conditions more severe forms, Demodex Mites, Ear Mites or Sacoptic Mites, then you definitely need to consult your veterinarian sooner than later, as these variations can cause your pet to become seriously ill as a result of them. Surprisingly, Mange can also be contracted by humans. The condition can get transferred to a human after having contact with an afflicted pet. Humans will experience the intense scratching and irritation in the same way as the pet does. Luckily, though, the infection will disappear in just a few weeks once the pet has been disinfected. The types of Mange that can affect humans are Sarcoptic Mange and Notoedres Mites.

If left untreated they would cause discomfort in your pet along with scabs, serum seepage or itchy red boils and the infection may turn severe. If your pet has patches of bald skin then get the animal tested. The vet will take a skin biopsy to ensure it is not another symptom of a different disease.

Steroid creams such as cortisone can be used to relieve some of the itching, as well as the redness and irritation. Bathing the animal is also recommended, using dandruff shampoos followed by any vet-recommended insecticides.

Demodex mange or red mange is not contagious hence humans cannot be affected by this. The first signs are patches of bald skin on the pet which would increase with time and get a secondary bacterial infection. They cause a lot of discomfort in the animal making the skin itchy, along with redness and boils.

The good news is that most cats and dogs recover from the various types of Mite conditions without any treatment at all. The problems occur when the pet is experiencing hormonal fluctuations or has a weakened immunity system for one reason or another.

Baths are excellent for treating and soothing a pet who is afflicted with Mange. You should also use any tonics or vitamins that you get recommendations about from your veterinarian. There are several vitamin choices that will help boost your pet’s immune system and make him less likely to suffer for too long.

Be very careful with treatment for your cat with Mange. Cats are much more sensitive to chemicals than are dogs, so it is imperative that you first discuss with your vet any treatments you plan on trying out for your cat.

Homeopathic treatments are a popular choice for many pet owners and they can be a good choice for pets that have sensitivity to certain medications. But, again, the first course of action is to talk to your vet. Of course the most important thing is the proper care, nutrition and cleansing of your pet to help prevent him from getting any of the varieties of Mange ever again.

All animals are different, and if you have ever owned any other pet then you know that already. All mammals have different needs and you need to make sure that you meet their dietary needs. You should also be aware that many pet products on the market are not only not what’s best for pet birds, but actively harmful. There’s little regulation in this area, so it’s legal for companies to produce and sell cages, toys, food, and medication that could be bad for your pet bird’s health. The good news is that not every product is like this, and if you take a little time to find out how to care for your bird correctly, you can quickly rule out products that could cause harm.

Every bird will need to start with a good quality diet that provides the correct balance of nutrients. For some birds, this is easy. Pre-packaged pellet feeds with all the nutrients they need are readily available. For others, there are only low quality seed mixes (while not all seed mixes are bad, many have problems) or the basic diet will require supplementation in order to provide everything your pet needs.

If you don’t give your bird the right nutrition the it is mores susceptible to illness. The thing about birds is that they sometimes don’t actually look sick until the problem has developed. At this point they might actually start losing feathers among other things. You need to make sure that you have a good veterinarian on hand that will give you decent help as you find issues with your bird.

If you see a change in attitude, an increase in sleep, discharge around the nostrils or beak, clicking sounds as your bird breathes, or poor grooming, your bird may be ill, have a diet deficiency, or be otherwise unwell. Birds that are sick may also be bullied by their cage mates. If any of this happens, don’t let it continue – your bird’s health is very important, and something needs to be done before the problem gets worse.

Be willing to take your vet’s advice when you bring your pet in, even if it means changing something major about the way you take care of your pet. It’s possible that your cage has been too small, the environment wrong for your bird, or that something else is wrong. If you aren’t willing to correct this problem, you’re not going to be able to keep your pet bird in good health. Even if someone else has told you that your setup is fine, take the time to try and correct it, for the sake of your pet.

Make sure that you are aware and pay attention because this is very important in the care of a pet bird. When you figure out the best way to take care of the pet, keeping them healthy will be a cinch!

The most common infectious skin disease in domestic felines, cat ringworm is a fungal infection, and not a worm at all. It is easily spread by contact.

In otherwise healthy cats, the disease often resolves itself within 6 to 8 weeks. To prevent the spread of the disease and to resolve it more quickly, your veterinarian may prescribe treatment. More difficult cases may take weeks or months even with treatment. Cats with compromised immune systems may take even longer and experience more severe symptoms.

Ringworm, or dermatophytosis, is a fungus which feeds on keratin. Keratin is a protein found in skin, hair and nails.

The disease gets its name from the round ring-like appearance seen on the skin. The classic ringworm symptom presents as patches of hair loss which appear as circular scaly areas with raised edges. These symptoms are fairly easy to spot.

The most common locations for infection are the paws, tail, face, head, and ears. Early symptoms include dry, flaky skin. In addition, you may see bald areas around the eyes, and on the ears and legs.

Cats with compromised immune systems may experience more severe symptoms, including crusty lesions that may become infected, red and sore.

The symptoms list for cat ringworm includes loss of hair (or broken hair) in circular patterns and hair loss in irregular patterns. Also visible is scaly, bumpy, red, or inflamed skin, and possibly deformed claws. Your cat may scratch the affected areas, but not all cases present with itchiness, and some cats may experience little to no hair loss with this disease.

Cat ringworm can only be diagnosed by your veterinarian, so get in contact with your vet if you suspect your cat is infected.

Cats, like any other pet and humans, sometimes get sick. Some symptoms aren’t particularly worrisome, but some indicate life-threatening illness. All pet owners need to pay attention to the health of their pet and make sure to find out cause of the problem before it can get worse.

Although there are lots of different symptoms and diseases that cats can get, there are a few that make up a decent percentage of problems. Whatever the issue, make sure that you get medical attention from your veterinarian if your pets’ condition gets worse or if it already needed treatment in the first place.

One symptom that is very common in cats is vomiting. Most of the time, this is caused be hairballs, but there can be other reasons for your cat throwing up. If your cat gets hairballs often, increase the combing, brushing, or petting you are giving your cat. Some cats shed more than others, and long-haired cats can need increased grooming. Your cat may need to be brushed every week or two down to every couple days. Another reason for cats throwing up include having a hard time digesting the food you’re feeding it, or even being allergic to its ingredients. Make sure your cat is getting enough water and doesn’t get dehydrated. If your cat gets worse, make sure you discuss the problem with your cats’ veterinarian.

Just like people, some diabetes is common in cats. If your cat has diabetes, you have to be very careful about its diet. Some signs include urinating frequently and getting thirsty very quickly. Beware if your normally energetic cat becomes lethargic. Even though many cats get less active as they grow old, a sudden change in activity could be a sign of diabetes. A diabetic cat can be harder to care for and you need to coordinate with your vet to properly diagnose your cat and treat it.

Diarrhea is often caused by diet. Give your cat a balanced diet and make sure they get enough liquids. Feeding a cat entirely dry food can contribute to kidney failure, but many cats can’t stand an entirely wet food diet either. Change your cats diet and contact your vet if your cat keeps getting diarrhea or has it often.

A troubling new disease that is affecting outdoor cats is FIV. Like its human counterpart, HIV, it is spread sexually. Getting your cat spayed or neutered does not protect against FIV. In some areas FIV is becoming a major problem–you may have to keep your cat indoors all the time. If you live in a city or area with a feral cat population, it’s best to limit your cats outdoor time as much as possible. Make sure that you take your cat to your vet quickly if you suspect your cat has this disease.

Remember to watch your cats health–cats can’t dial for help. (At least, I don’t know of any cats that know how to use a phone…;) Educate yourself more about cat illnesses and don’t underestimate the dangers to your pet.

Colic is the most important horse illness in terms of: – It is the most frequent cause of pre-mature death of horses – It is the most common cause of serious illness, with at least 1 in 10 horses getting it each year – It is the bigest single cause of large veterinary bills (into thousands of dollars. It sometimes results in other serious illnesses (e.g. laminitis or founder).

The primary causes have been identified by research which has spaned thousands of colic cases. Following is a list of what one should do to avoid these primary causes and thereby minimise the risk of horse colic.

1) Feed Frequently. Horses have evolved as foragers, eating throughout the day. The more often your horse eats, the healthier its digestive system will be. Try to replace a few large meals by more but smaller meals.

2) Grass or Hay. The horse’s digestive system is designed for high-volume and high-fiber foods. High-energy foods such as grain or musli do not meet these requirements. Although one can feed grain, the majority of the horse’s food should ideally be grass or failing that hay. Furthermore, when feeding both hay and grain, the hay should be fed first to aid digestion and reduce bolting.

3) Soak Pelleted Food. Unsoaked pellets (e.g. hay pellets) are more likely to be bolted and more likely to cause choke than soaked pellets. More relevantly, unsoaked pellets expand when they come into contact with stomach liquids and can thereby result in bloat and subsequently colic.

4) Lock Feedroom Door. Horses which get into a feedroom can stuff themselves, especially on grain, which can result in colic (it can also cause laminitis). A lock or horse-proof latch is adviseable.

5) Bolting. If your horse bolts (swallows before chewing) its food, discuss options with your veterinarian. You may need to change its feed or feeding regime (e.g. soak pellets, feed hay before grain, feed more often) to correct this habit. Also check if there are dental issues which require corrective work.

6) Dirt and Sand. Horses that ingest large amounts of dirt or sand are likely to develop impaction colic, especially if they have a low-fiber diet. Do not feed your horse on a sandy or dirty surface. Avoid putting them on over-grazed pastures, as they will ingest earth on such pastures.

6) Water. Ensure that the horse has access to water at all times. During winter, horses will often not drink enough if the water is too cold so one may need to warm the water. After exercise, limit the amount of water the horse drinks before it cools down.

7) Worming. Horses which are wormed regularly (3-4 times/year) are less likely to develop colic. All the horses on a given pasture should be wormed at the same time to prevent cross-reinfection. Horses which have not been wormed for a long time can get colic when wormed due to an excessive worm population, so they should be given a laxative a few days before to first reduce the quantity of worms.

8) Exercise. Horses which are regularly exercised or that have natural exercise through pasture access are less likely to have colic. When starting an exercise regime or sport, changes should be made gradually as a rapid increase in the amount or intensity of exercise may cause colic.

9) Bedding. Horses will often eat straw bedding. If your horse eats excessive amounts of bedding, especially indigestable bedding types (e.g. wood shavings), change to a bedding type which they will not eat.

10) Cold. Most horses can tolerate cold well, especially if they are young and healthy. However, if a horse becomes chilled (drop in body temperature) there is a good chance they will have colic. This is most likely when a period of mild weather is followed by sudden cold weather. It is also likely to occur when cold weather is combined with wet and windy weather.

Allowing your horse to grow a long winter coat and protecting it with a rug during the coldest weather is adviseable. Special care needs to be taken with old, sick or weak horses which are less able to maintain body temperature.

Just as with people, many pets suffer from arthritis. While most pet owners believe that arthritis in dogs only occurs in elderly animals, there are many other causes besides aging that can lead to the soreness and inflammation of a pet’s joints.

In more than half of the dogs over six years of age, there are some signs and symptoms of arthritis. Understanding the kind of arthritis that your animal is suffering from and what caused it can help you better understand how to treat the condition and prolong the happiness and quality of life for your pet.

Dog Joint Pain Resulting from Trauma

In some cases, young canines can have arthritis set up in joints that have experienced some type of trauma from injury. This can occur in working dogs or dogs that are overly active. There are several common types of conditions that are seen as a result of an injury. Traumatic Arthritis, which usually leads to osteoarthritis, is common after joint injuries.

Hip Dysplasia can result from injuries as well as be caused by infections. Shoulder Degeneration is usually caused from trauma but sometimes, too, can be caused by infections. Hypertrophic Arthritis is typically associated with bone spurs. Knee Stifle is a type of arthritis resulting from torn ligaments in the animal’s knee.

Acute Traumatic Arthritis is a condition caused from injury that often needs quick medical attention and possibly surgery. Unlike the arthritis that results from trauma in humans, the joint condition in dogs typically occurs very soon after the injury in pets.

Arthritis in Dogs Caused by Infections

While some types of arthritis are caused from injury, other types are caused from infectious elements in the joints. Infectious Arthritis is commonly caused by an infection in the area. This condition usually requires some type of antibiotic pet medicine. Shoulder Degeneration and Hip Dysplasia also both may occur from infections or from injuries.

Self Bodily Attacks Causing Dog Joint Pain

One common cause of some types of arthritis in cats and dogs alike is the body attacking itself. When Auto Immune Arthritis, better known as rheumatoid arthritis, occurs the animals own immune system is attacking and causing pain in the joints.

Pet Arthritis Due to Degeneration

Some pets have conditions that cause their cartilage to breakdown. Osteochondrosis is associated with the deterioration of the cartilage.? Osteoarthritis is also contributed to the breakdown of the animal’s cartilage. These are both typically progressive and chronic conditions. Near 90% of the cases of arthritis in dogs that are treated by vets are contributed to osteoarthritis.

The first step in helping your pet with painful and agonizing arthritis is to identify the type of condition. You should then discuss the symptoms with your vet. Once the problem has been discovered, you can begin carrying out treatments to help soothe your dog and make him more comfortable.

In some cases, you may need to distribute pet medicine while in other cases you may find that simple changes around the home make life more enjoyable for your canine.

Taking care of the health of your can, even from trivial things can ensure you at least 10 years of having a healthy furry companion with you.

Millions of people around the world own pets. A pet is not just an animal, but a part of the family. Unfortunately, pets can be a source of illness. Diseases transmitted by pets, although rare, do occur. Those at risk of contracting a disease from their pet are people with a weak immune system, women who are pregnant, and children.

A zoonotic disease, the formal name for diseases transmitted by pets, is usually transmitted to a person who has close contact with an animal or their excretions. These diseases can be easily avoided by cleanliness and regular veterinary exams. Children are more likely than adults to contract a disease transmitted by a pet because they often put their hands in their mouth, which makes it easier for bacteria to enter their bodies. Children are also more susceptible to diseases from pets because they have fewer antibodies than adults; this is also true for kittens and puppies compared to adult cats and dogs.

A common disease transmitted by pets is Salmonellosis. This disease, caused by the bacteria Salmonella, is usually contracted from contaminated meats, but reptiles and rodents can also carry them on their skin. This disease causes symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Headaches and fatigue are also possible.

Roundworms can also be contracted from pets to humans. Cats and dogs that are infected with the parasitical creatures can pass them in their fecal matter. Children are most likely to become infected by these parasites because they are more likely to play with or around the animal’s fecal matter, and are unaware of the dangers doing so. These worms can cause fever, cough, loss of appetite, and lung congestion.

Another disease transmitted by pets specific to cats is cat-scratch fever. This disease is caused by bacteria, living on the claws of cats, and come into contact with humans that are scratched by cats carrying them. Although this disease’s symptoms are mild in healthy people, people with weak immune systems and children can be infected more seriously. Symptoms can include high fever, loss of appetite, weakness, and swollen lymph nodes.

Strep throat can be transmitted by pets to humans and vice versa. Recent studies have provided evidence of this transmission, and doctors advise people to make sure that neither they nor their children are kissing, licking, or sharing food by mouth with their pets to prevent it.

Humans can also contract ringworm, a fungal infection, form their pets. Pets with bald spots should be avoided, because they are typical carries of the fungus. Ringworm shows up as a circular lesion on the skin, and hair loss occurs if any in the area.

Another disease transmitted by pets is scabies. Scabies is a skin disease caused by mites that burrow underneath the skin and cause severe itching. Animals that carry the disease-causing mites should be treated as soon as possible to prevent human contact with the mites.

Making sure that pets are going to the vet often is the best way to prevent any zoonotic diseases. Pet owners who make sure that their pets are disease free usually find that they are leading their pets and themselves into a healthier, happier life.

Flu in Dogs and Cats – Is it Possible?

Do dogs and cats get colds or flu, as humans do? The answer is yes, but they won’t catch if from you and you won’t catch it from them.

Your pet may be sneezing, coughing or have a runny nose – a dog or cat will have symptoms that seem just like a human cold. They may even suffer from labored breathing or a fever. It’s important to understand that although your pet’s symptoms are the same, the virus causing their illness is not.

In other words, your dog or cat doesn’t have the same variety of cold or flu as you do. Viruses are specific to their host species and require a dramatic mutation in order to “jump species”. It’s very unlikely that your pet will catch a cold from you, and you would not be likely to catch anything from them.

Dogs – According to the California Health and Human Services agency, Canine Flu (Influenza) is relatively new. The first case of Canine Flu was confirmed in 2003 in Florida, primarily affecting the Greyhound racing industry. By 2005, cases were being reported in California and many other states.

Up to 50% of dogs who contract Canine Flu will naturally produce antibodies that clear up the infection without ever showing signs of being sick.

The other 50% however, will end up having flu symptoms. The virus has an incubation period from 2 to 5 days and the actual infection stays in their system for up to 4 weeks.

Signs of Canine Flu are similar to a common illness in dogs known as “Kennel Cough” (Bordetella) and include:

* A thick nasal discharge

* Fever

* Coughing

* Labored breathing

* General state of listlessness.

Note that Bordetella vaccines do not protect your pet from Canine Flu. Since it is a relatively new disease, a vaccine for Canine Flu is still under development.

Cats – There’s a wide variety of organisms that can cause colds in cats. Many of the same symptoms appear in cats as in dogs, but there are a few differences.

* Dogs will tend to cough

* Cats will tend to sneeze.

* Both will have nasal discharge (however cats will likely have some discharge from their eyes as well).

Whether a dog or cat, it’s important to take your pet to your veterinarian if they have signs of cold or flu. The Vet will run tests to determine the actual cause of the symptoms and can prescribe medications to aid in your pet’s recovery.

Here’s a few things you can do to keep your pets comfortable while they recover:

Warm their food.

Your pet may experience some loss of smell while they’re sick. Warm food has a stronger smell and will help increase their appetite.

Keep their environment sanitary.

This will help avoid further infection and/or other diseases from developing.

Keep them warm and quiet.

Don’t encourage rough play or activity that will strain your pets’ ability to breath. Like us, they need rest to allow their system to recover.

With a couple of weeks of rest, your pet should make a full recovery.
