Loving our dogs is something we all love doing. However, they might have a few bad habits that may drive us crazy. Before you make that trip to the local animal shelter drop off, or before you waste a ton of cash paying a professional, try some at home dog training.

Doing your own dog training can be rewarding and satisfying. A lot of things are very simple to do and provide fast results.

For instance, dogs jumping on individuals is a common aggravating behavior. It might be they are just ecstatic to see you or just require attention.

However, you might not want them to do that to you, and you surely don’t want them to do it to a guest. Once your dog starts jumping, move away and ignore him.

You should not make any eye contact and don’t reward the behavior. As soon as he calms down, start your own contact. Get down to his level and praise and pet him.

Or you may give hime something else that will keep him occupied like obeying a command. (Something as simple as Sit). Be consistent and be in control. Dogs are smarter than a lot of people think and will eventually realize that jumping on someone does not bring the reward or attention they are seeking.

An additional negative habit is puppy biting and nipping. It is natural for them so don’t get bent out of shape when they do it.

I once had a pup that loved to play, but starting biting while playing. The solution I used was to feign some pain and cry out OUCH! And then NO! Very quickly.

Then I would resume play. In a short amount of time he started mouthing calmly instead of biting. Be consistent with this also, and the puppy will quickly learn not to do it. They won’t miss it as long as they can play and have your attention.

There a legions of dog lovers out there, but the wrong behavior of some dogs gives a black eye to owners with lovable trained dogs. So I promote some at home Dog Training to make our homes and neighborhoods a happier place.
